Official Rules for the Law Preview $10,000 1L Scholarship Contest
No purchase necessary. This is a promotion open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia, who, at time of entry, are over the age of 18, have reached the age of majority in their state of residence, and will be a matriculating first-year law student during the 2020 academic year at an ABA-approved law school in the United States (“Entrant”). This promotion is void where prohibited or restricted by law and is subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws and the rules of the Entrant’s school. The Law Preview “$10,000 1L Scholarship Contest” (“Contest”) is sponsored by Barbri Acquisition, Inc. D/B/A Law Preview (the “Sponsor’) with offices at 9400 N. Central Expressway, Suite 613, Dallas, TX 75231 USA. The Contest begins at 9:00 AM Eastern Time on November 1, 2020, and ends at 12:00 PM (Noon) Eastern Time on June 1, 2020 (the “Contest Period”). Employees, officers and directors of the Sponsor and each of their respective affiliates, parents, subsidiaries, advertising, promotion and service agencies, and members of the immediate family and individuals living in the same household of such individuals (whether related or not) are not eligible to enter.
HOW TO ENTER: 1) Draft a 500-word essay that answers the questions: “How do you intend to use your law degree to impact the world, and would a $10,000 1L law school scholarship impact your world?”. 2) During the Contest Period, submit your entry by: (a) visiting https://lawpreview.barbri.com/10000-scholarship/(the “Contest Website”); (b) registering for the contest site by clicking “Sign up” and filling in the form in full; (c) while Signed In, i) clicking on the Enter Contest button; ii) filling in the entry form by submitting the information requested in full; and (iii) uploading your essay to the Contest Website as instructed. The registration, essay submission and completed entry form constitutes the “Entry” in the contest. If you are selected as one of the top ten submissions, you will be notified on or about June 1, 2020. You may be required to submit a picture for your profile that will be posted July 3, 2020.
The essay must be a maximum of 500 words and no longer. The essay and accompanying photo should not contain any visible logos, drawings, cartoons, phrases, trademarks or other third-party content or materials. If an Entry includes any third-party materials (including but not limited to, any copyrighted content or any trademark, logo or mark that identifies a brand) or otherwise violates or infringes (or may infringe) any copyright or trademark, logo, mark that identifies a brand or other proprietary right of any person living or deceased (including but not limited to rights of privacy or portrayal in a false light), the Sponsor, at its sole discretion may disqualify the Entry. Furthermore, if the owner of such trademark, brand, copyright, logo, etc. insists that his trademark, brand, copyright, logo, etc. be removed from the site, the Entrant’s Entry may be removed from the site immediately and the Entrant disqualified from the Contest. No Entry shall contain any content that has been published previously. Entrants may not copy or otherwise plagiarize the Entry material from any source.
By submitting an Entry, Entrant must attest (and check the box where indicated) that he or she is, or plans to, matriculate at an ABA-approved during the 2020 academic and that Entrant acknowledges that he or she may be asked by Sponsor to provide proof of such plans in the form of a written letter of acceptance from, and a receipt for a confirmed seat deposit to, an ABA-approved school. Entrant agrees to provide Sponsor with such proof when and if requested. Failure to provide such proof when requested will be cause for disqualification.
The Entrant’s personally identifiable information may be posted on the Contest Website after it has been screened by Sponsor or Sponsor’s representative. Posting will not be immediate; there will be a delay between photo submission and posting.
Any Entry deemed inappropriate or unsuitable for posting, in Sponsor’s sole discretion will be disqualified. Any Entry material or portion thereof that is, in the Sponsor’s sole
discretion, obscene, profane, lewd, defamatory, contains any content unsuitable for publishing, or is otherwise objectionable, will not be considered and may disqualify the Entrant. The Sponsor reserves the right to verify the eligibility of any Entrant and/or the validity of any Entrant and to disqualify any Entrant who submits an Entry that is not in accordance with the Official Rules or who tampers with, or attempts to tamper with, the Entry, judging or voting process of the Contest. Failure by the Sponsor to enforce any of its rights at any stage does not constitute a waiver of those rights. All decisions regarding Entrant or Entry eligibility is in the sole discretion of Sponsor, and all decisions of Sponsor are binding and final. Any Entrant may submit only one (1) Entry to the Contest. Multiple submissions from the same candidate will automatically disqualify all Entries from that Entrant.
All Entries submitted become the property of the Sponsor and will not be returned. Normal Internet access and usage charges imposed by Entrants’ online service will apply. No information regarding Entries or judging, other than as set forth in the Official Rules will be disclosed. Each Entrant grants to Sponsor the royalty-free, irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive right to use, publish and broadcast his/her name, picture, portrait, image, likeness and Entry in all media and types of advertising and promotion without further compensation. Sponsor reserves the right to edit, reproduce, or otherwise make changes, additions or alterations to or deletions from all or any part of the Entry. Any Entry deemed in violation of the Official Rules, as determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion, will not be accepted and will be deemed ineligible to win any prize.
The winning Entrant (the “Winner”) as determined by Sponsors’ panel of judges (as defined herein) will be entitled to a $10,000 scholarship payable by the Sponsor (on
behalf of Winner) directly to the ABA-approved law school that the Winner plans to attend to cover all, or a portion of, the Winner’s first-year law school tuition or fees. If the Winner does not attend law school, the scholarship shall be refunded to the Sponsor and an alternate Winner will be determined by Sponsor.
Ten (10) Finalists will be selected by Sponsor’s panel of judges from all eligible entries, based on the following Judging Criteria:
- Creativity (up to 25 points)
- Passion (up to 25 points)
- Production quality (up to 25 points)
- Message (up to 25 points)
Finalists will be contacted by phone or email on or about June 1, 2020, and will be notified of their status as Contest Finalists. The Finalists and their Entries will be profiled on the contest website on July 3, 2020.
The first winner will be selected from among the 10 Finalists and the award will be paid directly to their law schools. Notification will take place on or before July 3, 2020.
WINNER NOTIFICATION: The Winner will be contacted by phone and/or email to let them know they have won on or before July 17, 2020.
GENERAL RULES: By participating in the Contest, each Entrant agrees to these Official Rules and to the decisions of the judges, whose decisions are final and binding in all respects. Entrants agree to sign all necessary releases, consents and authorizations in connection therewith and to sign any additional documentation Sponsor may require in connection with the Contest and/or to transfer the rights granted in the
Rules. Unless otherwise prohibited by law, submission of Entries constitutes permission to use the Entrant’s name, likeness, biographical information, state/province/country and Entry for any purpose including but not limited to advertising and publicity purposes, without compensation.
No substitution or transfer of the prize by Winner permitted. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute any prize with a prize of comparable value if any prize becomes unavailable. Taxes, fees, and any other expenses not specified herein are the sole responsibility of Winners.
CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT BY AN ENTRANT OR ANY OTHER INDIVIDUAL TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEBSITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE CONTEST MAY VIOLATE CRIMINAL AND/OR CIVIL LAWS AND SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, SPONSOR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO DISQUALIFY SUCH ENTRANT AND/OR SEEK DAMAGES FROM ANY SUCH INDIVIDUAL TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.
Sponsor and its agents are not responsible for technical, hardware, or software malfunctions, internet connection or telephone failures of any kind, lost or unavailable network connections, lost, late, incomplete, illegible, unintelligible, garbled or delayed electronic communications whether caused by the sender or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in this Contest which may limit the ability to participate or by any human or any other error which may occur in the processing of the submissions or votes in this Contest.
Sponsor reserves the right to cancel the Contest, in whole or part, if it (or the voting) becomes technically corrupted, or in the event of error, and it may in its sole discretion determine the Finalist and/or Winner from eligible Entries received prior to cancellation and all votes received prior to cancellation.
LIMITATION OF LIABILITY: ENTRANTS HEREBY RELEASE AND DISCHARGE SPONSOR AND ITS ASSIGNS AND LICENSEES FROM ANY AND ALL CLAIMS AND DEMANDS ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THIS CONTEST, ANY USE OF ACCEPTANCE OF A PRIZE, OR THEIR USE OF ANY ENTRY, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, ANY CLAIMS FOR DEFAMATION, INVASION OF PRIVACY OR RIGHT OF PUBLICITY. NEITHER SPONSOR, NOR THEIR AGENTS, EMPLOYEES, SUBSIDIARIES, OR AFFILIATED COMPANIES, OR THEIR ADVERTISING AND CONTEST AGENCIES, SHALL HAVE ANY LIABILITY FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, SPECIAL, PUNITIVE OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, LOSS OF OPPORTUNITY OR GOODWILL IN CONNECTION WITH THE CONTEST OR ANY USE OF ANY PRIZE. IN ALL EVENTS, THE SOLE MAXIMUM LIABILITY OF SPONSOR, AND ITS RESPECTIVE AFFILIATES SHALL BE LIMITED TO THE APPROXIMATE RETAIL VALUE OF THE PRIZE SET FORTH HEREIN.
DISPUTES: The state or federal courts in Dallas, Texas shall have sole and exclusive jurisdiction of any controversies regarding the Contest and the laws of the State of Texas, USA shall govern the same, without regard to their choice of law provisions. Each Entrant waives his or her right to a jury trial and any and all objections to jurisdiction and hereby submits to the venue of those courts within the city and state of Dallas, Texas, USA.
